What are RSS feeds?

News feeds allow you to subscribe to and access the latest headlines from different websites - such as blog entries, news headlines, vacancies, audio and video - as soon as the information has been published. The feeds are conveniently made available in one place so that you don't have to go back to the websites you have taken them from to look for any updates of interest to you.

RSS (most commonly expanded as 'Really Simple Syndication') is used to publish frequently updated works in a standardised format that can be viewed by many different programs - whether web-based, desktop-based or mobile-device-based.

Do I need to get a news reader?

Yes, you will need what's called a news reader, a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles etc that have been added. The simplest version is a browser based reader which allows you to catch up with your RSS feeds from any computer.

You can also view RSS content in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and there are many other different versions and downloadable applications available on the Internet.

How do I sign up and use them?

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want to subscribe to. For example, if you would like the latest business news, simply visit our news page (www.macintyrehudson.co.uk/news), click on the orange button on the left hand side and then click on the link that says "Subscribe to this feed" at the top of the page that opens up. You can also subscribe by dragging the URL of the feed into your news reader or by cutting and pasting the same URL into a new feed in your news reader. (The same applies to vacancies and seminars etc.)

The RSS reader will regularly check the feeds that you have subscribed to for new work, downloads and any updates that it finds. The benefit of accessing the information in this way is that it offers a simple user interface for you to monitor and read different feeds, all in one place.

How to subscribe to RSS feeds

To illustrate, this is what it could look like if you created a folder in Favourites/Feeds in Internet Explorer called "MacIntyre Hudson news" and subscribed to all of the feeds on our news page.
