Tom is a tax partner and leads the firm’s R&D group. He assists businesses in all industries to claim R&D tax relief, patent box and creative industry reliefs, maximising the cash tax savings whilst minimising time required by the company.
He joined MHA in 2013 after 12 years at Deloitte, and since that time he has obtained cash tax refunds for my clients of around £20m. Tom is a member of HMRC’s R&D Consultative Committee, ensuring that the firm stays on top of potential changes to the rules or interpretations, helping clients to both remain compliant and take advantage of changes as early as possible.
He also has a portfolio of corporate tax clients in a variety of industries, advising the company, business leaders, the shareholders and prospective investors in order to optimise their tax position in the context of their commercial objectives.
Tom helps to lead the firm's specialist technology sector group and regularly speaks at events organised by both the firm and third parties (including the Chartered Institute of Taxation and business incubators) on R&D and Patent Box.
R&D tax credit up, but too many businesses fail to claim!
The news about the government’s R&D boost is a timely reminder that UK businesses are still losing out on generous R&D tax savings. Over the last year, HMRC has given out £2.9bn across a range of industries, a 20 per cent increase from the previous year. Around half of this was claimed by SMEs, an average of almost £61,000 per company.
It was announced today that the Government’s review into the R&D tax relief regime has been completed and that it is both effective and internationally competitive. It has also pledged to continue to monitor international developments to ensure it remains so.
