NHS Pensions

Planning for retirement following a career in the NHS can be like forecasting the weather, unpredictable and constantly changing, and recent changes to the NHS Pension Scheme have resulted in significant tax implications for members.

Our team of medical accountants work closely with specialist medical IFAs when appropriate to ensure you get the best advice for your particular circumstances and will explain the options, allowing you to make an informed decision about the way forward.

How we can help:

  • Check the accuracy of your membership history and details on your annual pensions savings statement
  • Establish your current position and assess your exposure to a pension tax charge
  • Review any Lifetime Allowances protections to ensure they are still valid and advise on current protections  and how to apply for them
  • Predict the Lifetime Allowance at your planned date of retirement
  • Forecast the Annual Allowance  for each tax year
  • Forecast the Annual Allowance as part of a long term planning strategy
  • Planning for retirement (incorporating predicting the optimum time to take 24 hour retirement)
  • Full financial review alongside a specialist medical IFA
  • Discuss and explore alternative options to the NHS Pension Scheme if appropriate and subject to your personal circumstances

We act for over 400 medical practitioners in the NHS Pension Scheme, so if you are confused, need advice or have any concerns regarding your NHS Pension contact us, we would be happy to have an initial discussion over the telephone as a first step to helping you.

Our Leicester, Maidstone and Northampton offices are members of the Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants (AISMA) and James Gransby, Head of Healthcare, sits on the Board of Directors.

Bob Trunchion

Tax Partner

Whilst Bob qualified in the audit department of a big four firm, he soon moved to their Corporation Tax Department,  His move to MacIntyre Hudson in 1985 has rounded off his knowledge so that he is well versed in all aspects of tax. As well as advising clients on a consultancy basis, Bob is mainly involved in heading up tax training both in the firm and in our specialist training arm (www.mhasllp.com). He also spearheads the firm’s offering in training non financial managers and directors in understanding accounts (Financial Training Services)  on all manner of transactions. Whilst he is deeply involved in training, he has appeared on national radio and television talking about IHT. Bob believes that simple solutions are often the best ones with taxation.
