HR Solutions - Transport & Logistics Case Study
How our HR Solutions team helped guide a transport/logistics business through the best way to review current contracts
An airline Company were expanding their operating bases across Europe and required support to help with the recruitment of cabin crew in the newly operated European bases.
The Company had to be careful in their recruitment methods and be consistent in their approach to treat everyone that applied fairly and equally to avoid any potential discrimination claims during the recruitment process.
Assessment centres were conducted followed by one-to-one interviews with the same questions being asked of each candidate.
One particular concern was the candidates’ level of English as all cabin crew were required to have a good understanding of English and the ability to speak it. As the new operated bases were in countries where English was not the first language, the universal language to be spoken across the Company was English.
Assessment centres were a good way to demonstrate candidates’ understanding of English as the group exercises were all in English as well as the one-to-one interviews.
Advertisements were all in English in the respective countries, and assessment centres were held in hotel conference rooms that were central for people to travel to and from.
The outcome was positive with the recruitment of the required cabin crew and resulted in no claims for any unfair or discriminatory treatment during the recruitment process.
Employers should be aware that regardless of which country they are recruiting in, best practice would be to adopt equal opportunities.

We recognise that business owners and managers are not always confident as employers. Managers have often been promoted from within and, whilst knowledgeable in their area, are not people managers and may not fully understand what their legal obligations are.
Your business may operate on a shift-system and your employees may also regularly work overtime.
Your work may involve working with machinery or electrical systems, and you may also employ distribution drivers who use Company vehicles. All of these issues have employment law implications for you.
