International Business

Whether you’re running an international business in the UK or are looking to establish one, need advice on restructuring your overseas assets or are thinking of trading abroad, our team of international business and tax specialists have the knowledge and expertise to assist. Through our membership of Baker Tilly International we are able to provide premier accounting, assurance, tax and specialist business advice worldwide, drawing on internationally recognised industry and service line experts in over 140 countries.

Our clients range from privately owned UK companies with overseas operations to large UK subsidiaries and branches of major multinational groups. With increasing mobility in a global economy we also provide specialist tax advice for a large number of expatriates and non-domiciled individuals, both in the UK and abroad. We have been advising UK and overseas companies for many years on all aspects of business start-up and operation.

As well as traditional services, we offer specialised expertise for the international business community:

  • Audit and accounts
  • Selection of most efficient trading entity: Whether setting up or expanding a business, we recommend the most efficient trading and taxation structure for your business now, and in the future.
  • Domestic tax issues: We will advise on the most efficient means of meeting your domestic tax responsibilities.
  • International tax issues: We’ll guide you through the complexities of international tax regulations, with a focus on lmport Duties, Employment Tax, Remuneration, Transfer Pricing and VAT while mitigating your exposure, and reflecting on the impact of double tax treaties.
  • Strategy: For an increasing number of clients, we support strategic growth by assisting with such decisions as: where to base operations, how to access local funding (through enterprise zones, regional grants etc).

Setting up in the UK

We can assist with every aspect of initial advice leading to the assessment of trading operations. We work with you to decide which trading entity and structure is best suited to your needs. We examine all the relevant taxation and legal implications, advising you on issues such as transfer pricing and the impact of double tax agreements.

Expanding overseas

International expansion brings many new challenges and whilst different tax regulations and employment laws are critical, they’re only the tip of the iceberg. We can help you confront numerous issues from double taxation treaties, exchange control regulations to different legal systems and structures. Through Baker Tilly International we can introduce you to professional advisers anywhere in the world.

Expatriates

Our tax teams are highly experienced in dealing with the particular needs of people who come to live in the UK as well as British citizens who live and work abroad. We advise private individuals and businesses with international interests who want to support their people through the complex process of settling down in a new country.

Links with the shipping industry forged early in Howard’s career and which continue today led to his interest in overseas businesses. For the last 20 years he has led the firm’s international development group and his connections with a multitude of advisors including members of Baker Tilly International, around the world, ensures that companies based overseas and trading in the UK and the firm’s clients taking their first steps into new markets are actively assisted.

The international business development group links clients from the UK with Baker Tilly members throughout the world and clients referred from overseas are connected to the sector, service line and location that can most efficiently handle their affairs.

Our clients arriving in the UK from overseas are headquartered in all parts of the world but our highest concentrations have traditionally been the USA, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Australia as well as from the original links with shipping, Greece. Activities undertaken are widespread covering all types of products and services as well as retail, distribution, wholesale and manufacturing.

Having worked in the City of London for most of his career he is a Freeman and this demonstrates his continued and long term interest in the City. Howard is married to Leonie, the CEO of a communal volunteer organisation and both of them are actively involved in their local community and the promotion of inter faith relationships throughout London.

Yogan Patel

Partner

Yogan qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1983 and is a Partner here at MHA MacIntyre Hudson.

Yogan is very much a key part of his clients' teams. As well as having an advisory role he acts as a facilitator, enabling clients to clearly see through the obstacles that face them and find the solutions, rather than the more traditional provision of straightforward business advice. To give you time to answer the big questions, your business must be running smoothly, but for it to run smoothly time must be given to important issues. Yogan works with clients through the planning process and helps to turn ideas into actions.

In addition to advising owner-managed businesses on strategic matters and tax planning, he is fully involved in all aspects of a client's business which includes audit, accounts, tax compliance, recruitment etc.

Yogan has a wide range of clients, particularly in the Technology, Manufacturing and Property sectors, as well as in Fashion and Healthcare. His portfolio includes individual personal high net-worth tax clients, limited companies, limited liability partnerships and unincorporated businesses. He acts for both UK and international clients - notable territories include India, South East Asia, Middle East, USA and Cyprus. Yogan is also involved in fund raising, due diligence and the Reporting Accountant role.

Yogan is a Fellow of the ICAEW and a member of the ICAEW tax faculty and audit and assurance faculty. As one of the senior members of our International team Yogan travels widely meeting the needs of our clients wishing to do business overseas or set-up in the UK. He represents the firm in Middle East and Asia Pacific regions within Baker Tilly International and is responsible for the firm’s India desk.

Yogan also heads up Asia Pacific within MHA MacIntyre Husdon and travels to the Far East regularly and acts for clients from those areas establishing in UK giving them all support from advisory, tax structuring to compliance.

His interests include hockey, golf, yoga, travelling and spending time with his family.
