Life at the Birmingham office

 

Birmingham office is located at the heart of the Colmore Business District in Birmingham city centre and is very close to the vibrant heart of the City.  Amenities close by include the Bull Ring Shopping Centre, The Mailbox, the National Indoor Arena, the Symphony Hall along with many bars, restaurants, clubs, cinemas, music venues and theatres.

Our office is a friendly and relaxed environment and the whole team are approachable.  We are open plan and located in a professional office building which is shared with one of the large legal firms.  New team members tell us that they find the office welcoming and easy to integrate into, they find it easy to make friends and build relationships.

We have approximately 55 people in the office, which means we are large enough to offer a wide range of services to our clients but small enough that people are treated as individuals.  We have a wide range of ages represented from 18 year-old trainees, through a large number of ‘twenty-somethings’ through to more experienced senior staff.

The team have an active social life and there are regular social get-togethers, either arranged at an office level, or informally by the team.

The Birmingham office is a growing office and there is a regular flow of new clients being brought on-board, particularly in the mid-corporate space, which adds interest to all of our lives.  There is a significant opportunity in Birmingham for us to grow our client base and get involved in interesting advisory projects due to the strength and size of the local economy and also the consolidation in the accounting market which has reduced the number of mid-tier competitors represented locally.

We are also increasingly getting involved with cross-office projects and working with our colleagues at Baker Tilly International on international work.  The Midlands is a hotspot for inward investment from countries such as the US, Canada, Germany and so on and therefore joined-up international advice is of increasing importance.

We are keen to recruit new team members who are driven and have an interest in being exposed to new challenges, new clients and new people, and indeed who want to help us grow the local business.

Glen Thomas

Partner

Glen is an experienced tax professional and has been providing his clients with a broad range of advisory services for 20 years. He has advised on clients of all sizes from owner managed businesses to international groups. His expertise centres on corporation tax and all matters that affect entrepreneurial owner managed businesses.  He also advises on issues concerning tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions.

Glen also advises non domiciled individuals with regard to their UK tax affairs and regularly provides advice to non UK resident trusts concerning the UK tax implications of providing benefits to UK resident beneficiaries as well as holding UK assets.  Much of this work has involved planning to remove residential property from corporate structures after the introduction of the Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings (ATED).

His sector specialisms include property, manufacturing and technology, and retail.  He is of the view that most companies are missing the opportunity to claim the enhanced tax reliefs available for Research and Development activities without even knowing it.

Outside of work Glen enjoys spending time with his 2 boys who are beginning to share his enjoyment of sport.

Since qualifying with MHA MacIntyre Hudson in 2007, Andrew has been kept busy with a wide variety of assignments which has resulted in a breadth of knowledge and experience in helping businesses deal with compliance work, management reporting, internal accounting systems and much more.  As a result, Andrew’s specialist areas range from Solicitor’s Accounts Rules audits to being a certified Xero adviser.

James Roe

Audit & Accounts Manager

James qualified as a chartered accountant in an independent, local five partner practice in 2002.  He now manages a mixed portfolio of specialist and commercial clients at our Birmingham office.

James has a number of clients in regulated areas of business, namely professional practices and travel, and appreciates the challenges regulations can create. His portfolio also includes a significant property group with a numerous of LLPs and limited companies, a hotel group and medium sized groups and companies requiring audits, together with small corporate and unincorporated clients seeking advice and support on year end accounts and tax compliance.

James serves on the Birmingham office Technical Committee, and is keen to keep up to date on developments within the industry. He is also a key team member in the running and training of the firm’s audit and accounts software.
