One of the largest towns in the UK, Northampton has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age, but it had lost much of its significance until the government designated it as New Town in 1968, accelerating development in the town. It’s a town of expansion, with many areas undergoing urban renewal. It’s also among the fastest-growing places in the UK in terms of population. In 2014, Northampton was named by Experian as the best place in the UK to start and run a business.
Once a major centre of shoemaking and other leather industries, these days the main private sector employers are in distribution and finance, including Avon Products, Barclaycard, Blacks Leisure Group, Nationwide Building Society, Panasonic, Travis Perkins, Coca-Cola, Schweppes, Simply Business, National Grid, Texas Instruments and Carlsberg.
